When things are in a state of chaos, people rush to a variety of different places. One of them is the Church. Currently our nation is in a state of chaos, people are divided by political and social issues from the Supreme Court to racial tensions. When the world in in turmoil, it is extremely important for the Church to be unified and working as the Body of Christ, regardless of the varying opinions of those within it. To help us be unified, here are 3 verses to remind us of the unity God asks of His Church.
1. John 13:35 "Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples." Unity is important because of how it sets us apart as a people. While society is divided against itself, followers of Christ stand out because of their love and respect for one another.
2. 1 Corinthians 1:10 "I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment." Here, unity is paramount because it helps everyone keep Christ as the main focus. When everyone in the Church has one focus (that being Christ), the Church becomes more efficient and effective when facing adversity. There is strength in numbers, and when everyone is focused on the Father, the congregation as a whole will thrive no matter what challenges we as individuals face.
3. 1 Corinthians 12:14 "For the body does not consist of one member but of many." Unity puts use to everybody. God does not put anyone to waste, and when the church is unified with many unique and diverse talents, the Church becomes unstoppable. Think of he human body for a minute. You can't have a head without the neck, and you can't have the neck without the shoulders. Everything is used and everyone is important, which is a beautiful and distinctive trait in a dog-eat-dog world.
God does not just want us to be unified, He asks it. Working alone, we can do little. But if we put aside our differences, we can come together as a community and show Christ to the world.
