Refugee Services Informational Meeting

We are going to be meeting with Becky Nelson with World Relief next Tuesday evening (April 12) at 6:30pm.

We will be starting to work with the refugee services organization in the Lewisville area. They assist people, generally Chin people from Burma, who are relocated to Lewisville as refugees.

I would encourage everyone (everyone!) to consider becoming a part of this ministry. This is a perfect example of “glocal” missions – global missions in our own backyard. These people are the poor and the aliens among us that we are commanded so many times in the Bible to welcome.

Attending this meeting does not commit you to join this ministry! Come and find out how we can be involved.

Another thing I can’t help but mention is that our church sent a group a couple of weeks ago to dedicate our second church building in Cambodia.

In the 1970s, FUMC Carrollton had refugee ministry to those fleeing the violence in Cambodia. Out of that ministry came many friendships, countless changed lives, the Cambodian presence in our congregation today, other Christian Cambodian congregations in and around our area, and now our church’s mission work IN Cambodia!

This is an incredible way to reach an unreachable group and to introduce them to God’s love… in Lewisville! We can actually create ongoing, lasting, meaningful relationships with these people in a way that is impossible on short-term mission trips.

The meeting will be on Tuesday, April 12 at 6:30pm at the Basswood Apartments, 1020 Fox Avenue, Apartment #504 in Lewisville. Some of us will probably go have dinner together afterwards.

If you are planning to attend, let me know so that we can get a sense of how many people are coming (fmscdallas@gmail.com). If you don’t manage to RSVP, still come!
